Lumbar Puncture


To obtain CSF (see CSF) and/or administer treatment (e.g. intrathecal chemotherapy). It is sterile technique that the doctor will perform under local anesthesia in the patient's room. It does not require fasting.

After puncture, you will be instructed to rest in bed on the puncture site for a few hours. The head should not be elevated. However, the foot of the bed should be elevated to restoring circulation. You must also drink plenty of fluid.

You may have headaches: They may be more or less severe in intensity. If this occurs, you will be given analgesia.
