Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy
Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT): External radiosurgery consisting of administering very high doses of radiation in just a few sessions, between 1 and 5. It is applied to small tumors and to minimize damage to healthy tissue, image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) is used on each fraction. When the position of the tumor requires it, the distribution of the radiation dose is optimized using IMRT and if the tumor moves during breathing, a 4D CT simulation and respiratory gating are done.
SBRT is used to treat tumors in the lung, liver, spinal metastases and in other parts of the abdomen,
Advantages: External radiosurgery, which was first used in Spain at MD Anderson Madrid – Hospiten in 2001, has given local control rates of over 90% in early stage lung cancer.
