This service focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients with conditions related to the organs as a whole – mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, liver, intestines and so on, that make up the digestive apparatus using the latest technological advances on our patients, such as functional tests like hydrogen breath test, endoscopic capsule, sedated endoscopy, etc.
At the Gastroenterology/Digestive Unit we offer the patient Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS or echoendoscopy), a technique giving a wide range of diagnostic and treatment possibilities, such as more accurate knowledge of the extent of some tumors and precise biopsy of lesions difficult to access. Various studies in the United States, Japan and Europe have shown that this technique is more precise than other image techniques for many digestive tract tumors (esophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum).
EUS combines two diagnostic modalities: endoscopic visualization and high frequency ultrasonography, which enables high precision delineation of the different layers of the digestive tract wall, the study of the nodes in that region, a more precise biopsy and the option of injecting treatment substances and the removal by endoscope of superficial digestive tumors.
