Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a broad-scope surgical specialty dealing with the correction of congenital, acquired, tumor or involutive (tissue shrinkage) conditions requiring reconstruction or repositioning, or affecting the body’s shape or function, applying criteria of proportion and esthetic parameters. Techniques applied are based on transplanting and positioning of tissue by means of grafts, flaps or implants. Plastic and reconstructive surgery aims to reconstruct or improve the function and appearance of lesions caused by tumors, accidents and so on.

The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service at MD Anderson Madrid – Hospiten is made up of a team of specialists in plastic, reconstructive and esthetic surgery working in the context of a cancer center.

The objective of plastic and reconstructive surgery is to give the patient the same appearance, shape or form and function of the affected part of the body as before their cancer treatment. To do just that, the team uses the following materials and techniques:

  • micro-vascularized or pedunculated (stalk) tissue transplantation
  • alloplastic grafts
  • simple or composite tissue grafts
  • plastic surgeries and grafts

A complete cure of the disease is fundamental, but it is also important to improve the patient’s quality of life, avoiding the stigma of amputation or deformity caused by cancer treatment or surgery.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is a very broad-scoped specialty, so there is a close working relationship with surgical teams from other specialties where joint procedures take place. Thanks to the coordination between MD Anderson Madrid – Hospiten surgical teams, it is possible to carry out the removal of a tumor and reconstruction of the area in a single procedure, without the patient having to undergo an amputation or a second procedure. This does not only help with the patient’s recovery and his/her return to normal life, but helps avoid further procedures, time off work and the impact on their family life.
