Madrid, July 16 2019:- After almost 25 years working at the Puerta de Hierro University Hospital in Madrid as an attending physician with the Medical Oncology Service, Dr. Ricardo Cubedo has been named head of Sarcomas and Hereditary Cancer with the Medical Oncology Service at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid – Hospiten.

Dr. Cubedo has sat on multidisciplinary committees of breast pathology, musculoskeletal tumors (which he currently chairs), neuroendocrine tumors and melanoma. In addition, he has been a member of the pharmacy and hospital mortality committees and in the year 2000 he developed the palliative care program for Health Area 6, which he directed until 2008 and which is still running.

“Being part of MD Anderson Madrid – Hospiten allows me to attend the most complicated cases of sarcoma with the security of doing so backed by an extraordinary team of surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and radiotherapy specialists,” states Dr. Cubedo. The expert clarifies that he is very interested in “the field of hereditary and family cancer, because I feel it is a privileged platform from which to design effective prevention, healthy lifestyle and early diagnosis programs”.

Currently, Dr. Cubedo is a member of the Spanish Breast Cancer Research Group (GEICAM), the Spanish Sarcomas Research Group (GEIS), of which he was a member of the board of directors between 2003 and 2014, and the Spanish Group of Orphan and Uncommon Tumors (GETHI). Dr. Cubedo combines this work with the role of designated expert with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and with the role of external expert of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS).

In the field of education, he has led the teaching area of GEIS and coordinated the Master’s Degree of Musculoskeletal Tumors of the European University of Madrid (EMU). In addition, he formed and directed an International Preceptorship Sarcoma Group that trained sarcoma specialists from several Middle Eastern countries and has served as a tutor for medical oncology residents for several years.

On the other hand, Dr. Cubedo's main research work has been clinical, participating as a principal researcher in dozens of phase II and III clinical trials in the field of breast cancer and sarcoma. Dr. Cubedo was one of the precursors of the creation of the Early Clinical Trials Unit with the Medical Oncology Service at the Puerta de Hierro Hospital where he continues to practice as one of the principal researchers.
