Madrid, December 16, 2021 - Dr. Natalia Carballo, head of the Radiotherapy Service at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid – Hospiten and member of the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology (SEOR), has been elected as one of the Ambassadors of the city of Madrid at the “Recognition Night” Tribute Event, an event promoted by the Madrid City Council Tourist Office and the Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB). The doctor has received the recognition thanks to her personal commitment and work campaigning for the 40th Meeting of the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO) to be held in Madrid in August, thus, making the capital city, for the first time, the European headquarters of Radiation Oncology.

The event, marked by the presence of great personalities from academic institutions and associations present in Madrid, took place yesterday, December 14, at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The MCB Ambassadors Program was created in 2008 with the aim of paying tribute to people who, due to their professional position, have the potential to attract congresses to the Spanish capital.

Specifically, this award is due to the leadership of Dr. Carballo in the creation and implementation of the ESTRO Madrid 2021 Legacy project, a pioneer project in the world, to bring cancer radiotherapy closer to the public. The project has developed the inforadioterapia.com website, which offers information on what radiotherapy is, why it is important, what the benefits of the technique are for the survival and quality of life of cancer patients or what skin care is needed during the process, in addition to patient testimonials and an audiovisual campaign called ‘Invisibles’ made by SEOR. The award demonstrates the value of the doctor's work for the city of Madrid, helping to position the city as the capital of innovation and development.
